The National Archives holds the records of the modern Irish state which document its historical evolution and the creation of its national identity. Under its governing legislation – the National Archives Act, 1986 – the National archives provides services both to the Government and the public.

Storage Systems Limited has recently completed a large installation of Compactus Archive Mobile Shelving for the National at Bishop Street in Dublin’s City Centre. This installation is the latest in a series of 6 major projects completed for the National Archives since 1995 and brings the total number of bays installed to over 2,000 providing storage capacity for 100,000 archive boxes. Each mobile shelving bay is 2046mm high x 1250mm wide x 450mm deep and has 5 storage levels.

Mobile bases are 10m long and are fitted with a reduction gear drive system which enables block loads of 35,000kgs to moved simultaneously. All mobile shelving guide rails are set into raised access floors. A special requirement of this project was steel protection guards to the front end of all mobile bases to prevent damage to decorative panels and handwheels by trolleys etc.

Another project completed for their basement archive storage area in the Four Courts building in Dublin’s city centre, the National Archives chose a sysco shelving storage solution. In total 200 bays of sysco archive shelving are installed in various vaults located in the basement of this courts building.
